Reading through this made me come back to the starting assumption "to compete in 2025", which sounds obvious but when we are talking about trading Roupp for Josh Naylor, I think I might be further away from the 'compete now' end of the spectrum. Best case scenario is he adds a couple of wins in 2025 and we get a pick from the qualfying offer. We actively don't want to sign him long term with Eldridge in the wings, so is that worth a young, cost-controlled SP with some upside?
I appreciate that this move can't be viewed in isolation given that you have Wade going out in your first transaction, but to me Wade + Roupp is definitely preferable to Naylor.
Thanks for the time that's gone into this - plenty to discuss!!!
Those are very interesting off season plans for the Giants. I had my own off season plan and wondered what you think about it. #1. I wanted to trade for Josh Naylor so I will go with Roup, but I thought it might take Luciano and Roup. #2. Trade Yaz, Wisnenhunt, Rayner Arias, Tyler Rodgers for Sandy Alcantara, the Giants would have about about 2-3 million of salary to pay in the deal. #3. Sign Adames 7/180, give him a salary of 20 million the first year. #4. Ha Seong Kin 4/60, gives him a salary of 10 million the first year. #5. Sign Snell 6/160 million, first year AAv 25. #6. Trade Hicks, Casey Schmitt, Harrison, Wade, Whiteman for Luis Robert Jr. This might be a lot to pay for him, but Giants save about 2 million in the deal and get the last piece of the puzzle in the deal. #7. Sign Shane Bieber 2/24, give him 8 million for the first year. Trade Taylor Rodgers salary of 12 million and maybe retain 2 million and try to trade Robbie Rays’s salary and retain 10 million this year and 5 million next year. Trading either of them separately or together would be an act of God. I get this is all a fantasy, but if the Giants get aggressive that would be an awesome off season. Get Naylor, Adames, Snell, Alcantara, Bieber and HSK would be awesome and cost the Giants around 92 million in salary all together for 2025, but trading Yaz, Rodgers brothers, Wade, Flores, Robbie Ray, Hicks, and Murphy could off set the cost at 60 million. The Giants could even try to sign Tanner Scott for 4/60 million and give him a salary of 12 million first year. That would be a net of 42 million dollars that the Giants have added this year in salary. They could stay under the luxury tax too this year. Structure deals with high salaries for 2026 season.
